India issued a notification that puts taxi service provider Uber out of business Uber was clearly in violation of the RBI’s regulations requiring all credit/ debit card payments to be subject to a “two-factor” authentication The process requires the cardholder to enter some variant of a PIN or password after swiping the card in addition to signing the payment slip While it is no one’s case that Uber was on the right side of the RBI’s regulations questions must be asked about the regulations themselves This seems to be another case where the RBI is trying to ensure safety at the cost of financial innovation and consumer freedom Uber’s business model was an important innovation in the taxi service industry A customer has to submit her credit card details on its website Once she takes a ride she merely climbs out of the taxi without having to make a payment on the spot The payment is made using the credit card details stored with Uber A bill is sent to the customer via email This greatly eases the convenience of using taxis Consumers need not carry cash and there is no risk of an on-the-spot credit/ debit card transaction failing The potential to increase productivity through such innovations becomes clear when the time saved is aggregated across the estimated five million taxi rides that are taken every day in India While the RBI’s general concern for consumer protection may be valid in this case by requiring two-factor authentication the RBI could be accused of standing in the way of financial innovation It appears to be telling taxi companies: you are competing on a mediocre level-playing field in a regulatory system that disregards innovation It seems to be telling consumers: you do not have the freedom to make a choice between convenience and safety The RBI does not allow a consumer the freedom to waive this high-security procedure even for a transaction of Rs 500 The root cause of this is the lack of accountability of the RBI’s regulation-making process There is no formal public consultative process no requirement to demonstrate the costs and benefits of regulations or any publicly available information on the effectiveness of regulations We should move towards a legal framework that requires regulators to follow a rigorous consultative and evidence-based process for regulation-making For all the latest Opinion News download Indian Express App said Terming the fare increase as "unacceptable" Kejriwal had written to Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri demanding that the decision be withheld and reviewed Representational image AFP "The minister (Puri) has asked UD Secretary DS Mishra to examine the issues raised by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the proposed fare hike" a spokesperson of the ministry told PTI Kejriwal has stiffly opposed the planned hike to be effected from 10 October and on Saturdayclaimed that it would a violation of the recommendations of the fare-fixation panel "The fare-fixation committee had recommended a gap of one year between two fare hikes This recommendation is being completely violated because the proposed second hike in October2017 will take place even before six months since the previous fare hike" he said in the letter to Puri The committee comprising representatives of both the state and the Centre which have equal stakes in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is entrusted with recommending fare hikes The Delhi Metro fares were last revised in May If the hike is effected the fares will go up by a maximum of Rs 10 from 10 October The existing fare structure is: up to 2 kilometres — Rs 10 2-5 kilometres — Rs 15 5-12 kilometres — Rs 20 12-21 kilometres — Rs 30 21-32 kilometres — Rs 40 and for journeys beyond 32 kilometres — Rs 50 From October 10 for a distance of up to two kilometres the fare will remain Rs 10 but for a distance between two and five kilometres it will go up from Rs 15 to Rs 20 For the subsequent slabs it will go up by Rs 10 each which means the maximum fare will be Rs 60 The Delhi Metro on its part has been maintaining that it has a "huge loan liability" and a rapidly rising operating ratio which means its expenditure as against every rupee earned is going up In his letter Kejriwal had referred to the financial model of the Hong Kong Metro and suggested that following it would significantly improve DMRC’s finances and lead to a much lower fare hike He also mentioned that his assertion was based on the "advice" of the fare-fixation panel "The fare-fixation committee has advised the DMRC to raise funds through real estate development from a large number of properties allotted to it by the government "If this is done efficiently and transparently the resultant income will help reduce the fare of the ordinary commuter as in the case of the Hong Kong Metro" the statement quoted the chief minister as saying New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said there is a crisis of confidence in the government and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must give "every Indian" the confidence that he cares for people’s well-being Former prime minister Manmohan Singh AFP Singh was critical of the prime minister for not speaking on issues like beef or communal riots in Muzaffarnagar and elsewhere Stating that "people don’t believe the government" the former prime minister said "when they (apparently industrialists) go and call on the ministers they say the right things but when they come out all of them say that nothing much has changed. There is today a crisis of confidence in the government" Singh said beef controversy and issues like intolerance were problems "I don’t know I cannot read his mind But he is the prime minister of all the people of India and he must give every Indian the confidence that in him we have a prime minister who cares for our well-being" he said Reacting to his remarks Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the criticism was "misplaced" while adding that the Modi government had launched a host of schemes like Mudra and Jan Dhan besides other welfare measures for the downtrodden and weaker sections of society "Singh is very welcome He advised the prime minister to be PM for all India and I will like to say that Modi’s campaign was ‘sabka saath sabka vikas’ (with all development for all) and he is very clearly fulfilling this" the BJP leader said PTI Written by Priyanka Sharma | Mumbai | Updated: May 2 2017 1:06 am Pooja Banerjee said she has already struck a great friendship with her Related News Price: Rs 14999 Look and feel: The ZPump Fusion sports a very minimalistic design It has only three parts- fusion sleeve the pump and Z-rated outsole Reebok had sent me the black colour version The shoe did not impress me with its look I have seen many good looking shoes than the ZPump Fusion at a much lesser price from other brands The ZPump Fusion is extremely light and is made of synthetic textile material The shoe boasts mostly about its comfort and it appears rather too simple for the price Comfort: After putting on the right size it doesn’t feel like you are wearing anything apart from the outsole The trick with the pump is that you will have to strike the right balance between the amount of air you pump in and how tight you tie the laces Don’t be of the impression that more air will help you bounce The air cage of the shoe is confined to the sides and top of the feet If you feel that with tight laces and a full blown pump you will get the maximum punch then you are mistaken as your legs will start paining (especially the calves) very soon The pump simply helps you get that perfect custom fit after you have tied the laces as per your comfort It ensures that your feet don’t move at all while you are running The good part is that the toe area is kept free and it doesn’t feel cramped While the Z-rated outsole is built to perform it’s not the best when it comes to cushioning I found it to be a bit hard inside when compared to the rest of the shoe Reebok could have made things a bit softer to provide good cushioning to the sole of the foot While you won’t feel this in a brand new pair this might be an issue after a month of regular use While running I expected better ventilation from the pump This shoe talks a lot about air but it would have been nice if things were actually more airy inside Overall the shoe manages to provide the right amount of comfort required for running however the inside of the sole could have been more comfortable Performance The ZPump Fusion is built for running It provides good grip and is perfect for running on roads pavements and other urban conditions thanks to the Z-rated outsole The sole offered good traction but it was a bit slippery on marble floors I couldn’t get the maximum grip while running on pavements near metro stations It is extremely light and the feet don’t feel heavy after a quick sprint For marathon the light weight along with the custom fit is a huge advantage However you will have to adjust the pump at regular intervals as it becomes a bit stuffy The material of the laces could have been superior as it loosens easily Verdict The ZPump Fusion is strictly meant for running only The pump and Z-rated sole will make a difference only when you run daily If you jog or go on brisk walks then don’t buy this shoe In India most consumers like to flaunt their ‘sports shoe’ with a cool pair of denims Don’t think of that with the ZPump For all the latest Lifestyle
