first_imgStay on target He was an insufferable folk musician, the inventor of humanoid robots and a rubbery Apocalypse. But he will forever be Poe Dameron, the best space bro a former stormtrooper could ever ask for. Oscar Isaac celebrates his 38th birthday today, and we couldn’t be happier to have him around.Isaac was born in Guatemala on March 9, 1979. Growing up in a very religious household, Isaac rebelled hard as a teenager and ended up getting expelled from school. According to a 2013 interview with The Globe and Mail, he set off a fire extinguisher in the gym. As he got older, he started doing whatever he could to make other kids laugh, and eventually started playing in punk bands. This guy was born to be Poe.There was a lot to like about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was the first great Star Wars movie in about 30 years. It brought back the characters we loved. It didn’t have a Jar Jar. One aspect that seemed to capture the hearts of fans around the world was the relationship between Poe and Finn. They instantly bonded by piloting a stolen TIE Fighter together and when they met up later after Finn presumed Poe had died, it was like no time had passed at all. In that moment, all anyone wanted was someone to look at them the way Poe looked at Finn.Yes, he’s had, and will continue to have, other great roles in film and television. He gave brilliant performances in A Most Violent Year and Ex Machina. But that’s the joy and the curse of being a part of Star Wars. He’ll always be Poe. It’s not all bad. He’ll always have the adoration of millions of fans, an action figure of himself, and he’s the star of a fantastic comic book series. (Have you read Marvel’s Star Wars comics? You should read Marvel’s Star Wars comics. Poe’s and Darth Vader’s are particularly fun.)So to the man who brought Poe Dameron into our lives, we say thank you and happy birthday.
