South Africa dearly missed the services of fast bowler Dale Steyn on Thursday as they got crushed by England in the World Cup 2019 opening match by England at The Oval in London. Dale Steyn is yet to recover from a shoulder injury which is why his availability for the Proteas is still under cloud.South Africa restricted England to 311 but failed miserably in their batting and got bowled out for 207 in under 40 overs to lose the game by 104 runs. The loss was South Africa’s second biggest in terms of runs in World Cup history and only their second in the tournament’s opening game in all the editions they have been a part of.”I think we have been outplayed in all three departments. Basically we were 3 down in 12 overs and I think we were looking for 330-340 but when we took the pace off we thought 300 was par. It was a plan (to start with Tahir). We wanted to target those two openers with leg spin, especially Roy. It worked today.”Their batting was really good. They are a top-quality team and they showed that with the bat today. You need a bit of momentum in the first two games. He (Amla) is okay now and when he came back to the dressing room, he looked fine and hopefully that’s a good sign for the next game. When we have Dale and all our resources, we back our bowling to restrict teams under 300,” Faf du Plessis said at the post-match presentation ceremony.advertisementBen Stokes top-scored with 89 and Jason Roy, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan also made fifties in the hosts’ total of 311 for eight after being sent into bat.South Africa’s Quinton de Kock hit 68 and Rassie van der Dussen 50, but England took wickets at regular intervals to ensure the required run rate kept climbing.Stokes pulled off a spectacular leaping one-handed catch on the boundary to dismiss Andile Phehlukwayo and Jofra Archer claimed three wickets as South Africa were bowled out for 207 with more than 10 overs to spare.England will next face Pakistan in Nottingham on June 3 while South Africa will take on Bangladesh in London on June 2.Also Read | England vs South Africa Highlights, World Cup 2019Also Read | Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer power England to opening night winAlso Read | World Cup 2019: Hashim Amla retires hurt after being hit on helmet by Jofra ArcherAlso Read | World Cup 2019: Imran Tahir 1st ever spinner to bowl 1st over of a World Cup
