This new proven method was expected to hopefully interest more people in learning the techniques.“Studies show that performing proper chest compressions alone yields the same results that traditional CPR was thought to do. It’s not the long, complex and time consuming course that people used to have to take.,” explained Jennifer Waldron, Huntington Hospital’s Disaster Program Manager.The energetic staff and firefighters made sure that learning the proper chest compression techniques were done to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” that was blasting through the sound system. This allowed participants to feel the quick rhythm required to effectively treat a victim of cardiac arrest for a minimum of sixty seconds at best.According to Huntington Hospital’s Pre-Hospital Care Coordinator Jenny Vanslyke,performing chest compressions alone can double or even triple a person’s chance of being revived in a cardiac situation.“When only ten percent of cardiac arrests survive today — it’s a huge improvement,” said Vanslyke.“Sidewalk CPR” is a nationwide event that is sponsored by the American Heart Association. Los Angeles County organizations from all over participated in the hands on public training just like the one at Paseo Colorado.“It’s happening all over Los Angeles County today so most fire departments, hospitals and clinics are participating,” said Vanslyke.Los Angeles County aims to reach out to a wide demographic to ensure people have the necessary skills to save one’s life, which is more times than not someone they know and care about.The eventual goal is to re-introduce this training into schools to properly equip the youth with life saving skills that will stay with them throughout their lives.“About eighty percent of sudden cardiac arrests occur at home so for many people it’s usually a loved one’s life you’re saving. Rates hike scare for retailers

first_imgPrint A REVALUATION of commercial rates in Limerick city could see some retailers paying more, depending on the location of their business and its rentable value.Despite a dramatic fall in rents, this will not necessarily translate into a reduction in rates, as some property owners will have to make up the deficit, from those whose rates are lowered or who cannot pay.The Limerick Post has learned that under the national programme to revalue all commercial property, work began on valuing Limerick properties in March of this year.However, a local ratepayer highlighted that people in upward-only lease reviews, who cannot renegotiate their rates’ could be penalised further.“There will also be no incentive to maintain or do up properties as this will be reflected in an increase in rent”, said the ratepayer.The new system will see the rentable value of the property multiplied by the annual rate on valuation (ARV), as set by the local authority, based on the revenue it needs to raise for the year.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up Conceding that there will be winners and losers in the process, Patrick Conroy of the Valuation Office, speaking to the Limerick Post ahead of a presentation given at the National Franchise Centre this Wednesday said:“The aim is to redistribute the burden to achieve more equity and fairness by capturing the market at the most appropriate valuation date.“The rental of a property is already based on the success and footfall in the area in which it’s located, and now rates will be on the same basis. If one street falls off in value the rates will fall, whereas there will be an increase on busy streets.“We don’t just make it up – all the details we collect from businesses will go to our market analysis unit”.He stressed that the local authority will gain no increase in revenue.“What they are entitled to collect has been capped and will remain the same”.Meanwhile, Siobhan Murphy of GVA Donal O’Buachalla property consultants who deal in valuations said that some ratepayers could face an increase of up to 100%.“People might be expecting a reduction in rates but in reality they could be making up for a decrease granted for others,” she told the Limerick Post.Explaining that with the council having to collect a fixed amount, there could be a ‘buffer’ of up to 20% involved to allow for non-collection, Ms Murphy added:“It’s early to tell what the effects will be as only three out of 88 areas have had the new multipliers applied to date, despite the revaluation being ordered in 2005”.In the completed areas of Fingal, Dun Laoghaire and South Dublin the local authority multiplier ranged from 0.15 to 0.17, based on a 2005 valuation. It is expected this will be higher in Limerick due to a more dramatic decrease in rents .“Ratepayers will have just 28 days to submit representations. if unhappy with the new valuation certificate,” said Ms Murphy.An amendment bill is currently in place to hurry up the process and, should this be passed, will mean the removal of the right to internal appeal.A right to appeal to the Valuation Tribunal will remain and final valuation certificates will be issued in early December 2014 with the new valuation list coming into effect from January 1, 2015. It is great to see the ladies team back representing the club and the numbers at training have been excellent with some fine footballers coming through.The under 14 girls training has been changed this week it is now on Saturday 15th from 2 to 3.30pm. at the club, there is no training the following Saturday due to the parish Confirmations.Our under14 boys got their league campaign of to a flying start with a convincing win over near neighbours St. Eunans. in O Donnell park Next up for the 14s is an away trip to Newtown this Sunday at 12 noon.The under 14s train every Monday night in the Aura at 7.30pm and the same time Thursdays at the club.The Under 12 boys continue their training regime on Mondays in the hall at 6pm and on Fridays in the Aura , also at 6pm. The Under 12 girls continue their training on Fridays at the club from 7 to 8pm.The first round of Comartas Peile na Gaeltachta will begin this Saturday 15th, with the Seniors at home to Dungloe with the throw in scheduled for 4.15pm. and the Reserves will play Termon away on Sunday 16th at 12 noon..This will be the first opportunity to see our boys in action in 2014 so please come along and give them our support.The under 15s are due to play in the Gaeltachta this weekend away to Glenfin but as yet no time has been fixed, players will be contacted by their management.All other underage training continues as normal with no changes to existing schedules.Well done to our county men for a fantastic comeback against Meath last Sunday, and what can you say with regard to the equalising point, it took a cool head to put that over, well done Michael. 3 critical challenges your business incubator should solve

first_imgTo develop an idea into a business, incubation seems to be the new industry “normal.” There are thousands of incubators worldwide and each year that number is continuing to grow. There are private, public and corporate incubators, many with a distinct focus on local economies, global, communities, or a specific vertical.At this point, it sounds like variations of ice cream. Over 9,000 flavors, all around the world. If there’s incubation happening, it’s because there is a demand from companies, and because the companies that incubate probably accelerate beyond their competition.Incubators originated in New York during the late 1950s as co-working spaces offering affordable office space and shared resources to local entrepreneurs. As they evolved, incubators began providing mentor advice in the mid-1980s. By the mid-2000s we saw explosive growth when a new wave of incubators including 500 Startups, Techstars, Y Combinator all provided access to exclusive networks and investors.Combined with crowdfunding, incubation is now seen as the royal path towards venture capital investment. Going down this path will provide you with a cheaper and faster route to a successful round of financing.All is sound and clear. Or is it?Let’s take a step back and start with what it mean to “incubate.” To incubate means “to cause or aid the development of an idea.” Notice, that a company’s stage is not mentioned in the definition. More recently there has been a pushback on joining incubators due to a feeling to late-stage for them. But as entrepreneurs, we always need support and to be incubating what we do. Incubation plays a significant role in the developmental success of our companies.Now back to the why. Over 90% of startups will fail to make it past their first round of financing or being able to generate revenue. Only 10% have a chance to survive beyond and push forward on developing a company; a chance, not a guarantee. Today ninety percent is high, but we can see that number decline as more entrepreneurs take advantage of programs like incubators.But to do so as entrepreneurs, you need to be aware of the drawbacks with current structures of incubation programs.#1: PaceTraditional incubation programs today can be long and drawn out, lasting anywhere from 4-12+ months. During that time you’re left on your own with little action in between. This duration provides a disservice to the entrepreneurs involved by not helping them quickly validate their idea early enough so that decisions can be to more forward or pivot to another direction. Instead, this crawling pace encourages slow company growth and development leading towards a higher likelihood of failure.#2: AttentionMost incubation programs today work with a cohort size of 50-100+ startups. This is in part due to the nature of how they generate revenue (yes, they’re a business too) have to bet on a large number of startups to ensure they see a profitable return. Which means you become a number. Sadly, this is a structure built for fast winners, and everyone else falls between leaving you on your own, little personal support, or being given a helping hand.#3. NetworkThis is what most entrepreneurs fail to truly capitalize on while a part of an incubator program today. Good programs survive and thrive on their strong networks of mentors and investors who each have given their time and resources for support. But most programs fail to help entrepreneurs understand the network’s value and entrepreneurs fail to capitalize and to build meaningful relationships with those inside the network.
