John Hurts War Doctor Returns in Final Audio Tales

first_img Sir John Hurt passed away last week, but the War Doctor is still fighting in Big Finish Productions’ latest volume of audio tales.The four-disc Volume 4: Casualties of War CD collection is available now to pre-order, ahead of its February launch.From the minds of Guy Adams, Andrew Smith, and Nicholas Briggs, the three-episode series follows the War Doctor (Hurt) and Cardinal Ollistra (Jacqueline Pearce) as they fight their way from the outer reaches of the galaxy back to Gallifrey.Big Finish Productions“The Doctor finds casualties in every place the Time War has touched,” the Big Finish synopsis said. “Among them, a fighter, a traveling companion of the distant past, who remembers him quite differently. A warrior woman named Leela.”Reprised by Louise Jameson, the classic companion (later known as Leelandredloomsagwinaechegesima) was a member of the warrior Sevateem tribe. She met the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) during his visit to her home planet; the two became friends, and she deserted her world’s new society to follow the Doctor.“We were friends,” the War Doctor says in the Vol. 4 trailer. “I cannot trust you,” a bitter Leela counters.The fourth and final set, “Casualties of War” was directed by Briggs—the voice of Doctor Who‘s Daleks, Cybermen, and various other foes. Fans can pre-order the CD set for $25.05 or the digital edition for $20. An exact release date has not yet been announced.Hurt, who took on the part of the War Doctor at age 73, starred in BBC One’s Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode, “The Day of the Doctor,” opposite the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant), the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), and Bad Wolf/Rose Tyler (Billie Piper).The unknown incarnation of the Time Lord—”the one who broke the promise”—faces a moral dilemma in having to save the universe by ending the Time War.Known for roles in Midnight Express, Alien, The Elephant Man, the Harry Potter series, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, legendary British actor Hurt died three days after his 77th birthday, following his fight with pancreatic cancer.
